The 5-step yard reset

May 2, 2026 · 5 min read

A neglected yard doesn't need a redesign — it needs a reset. Here is the exact five-step order we use to bring a property back in a single visit.

1. Cut the grass down in stages

Overgrown turf should never be scalped in one pass. We drop the height gradually so the lawn keeps enough leaf surface to recover, then finish at a healthy three to four inches.

Cutting more than a third of the blade at once stresses the plant, browns the lawn and invites weeds into the thin spots.

2. Re-cut every edge

Nothing makes a property read as 'handled' faster than a crisp edge along the driveway, walkways and beds. It is the single highest-impact step in the whole reset.

3. Clear the beds

Weeds get pulled at the root, dead material comes out, and the bed line gets re-cut by hand so mulch has a clean shoulder to sit against.

4. Shape the shrubs

Overgrown shrubs swallow a house. Selective trimming restores form without leaving the plant looking sheared flat, and flowering shrubs get trimmed on their own schedule.

5. Blow everything clean

Clippings off the walks, drive and porch. The finish is what people remember, and it costs nothing but a few extra minutes.
